Lara Spencer in her prime: Blended family, college send-offs, and a love story in motion

    Published on

From morning TV to flea markets, and now college drop-offs and globe-trotting date nights, Lara Spencer is living a life that’s anything but ordinary.

The Good Morning America contributor, HGTV favorite, and style-savvy author isn’t just a TV fixture. She’s a mom of two, a wife to a tech mogul, and a woman making her 50s look like the prime of life.

From GMA mornings to Flea Market flips

Lara first captured America’s attention on Good Morning America, where her vibrant charm made her a morning staple. But behind the polished anchor desk was a woman with big passions — design, travel, and storytelling.

After years co-anchoring GMA, Lara stepped back in 2018 to focus on producing and hosting Flea Market Flip, her HGTV treasure-hunting series. She’s also penned two books on vintage design, proving her eye for secondhand style is as sharp as her on-air interviews.

Balancing creativity with credibility, Lara made her mark in both news and lifestyle, carving a career that lets her chase stories and antique sideboards.

A love story that began with a blind date

In 2018, Lara married tech entrepreneur Rick McVey in a breathtaking outdoor ceremony in Vail, Colorado. The pair had met on a blind date set up by a friend and quickly became inseparable.

Rick, the founder and CEO of MarketAxess, brought not just love but a new chapter. Between them, they share five children from previous marriages. Lara has two (Duff and Katharine) with ex-husband David Haffenreffer, while Rick has three grown daughters.

Their wedding was full of heart: Lara’s son Duff walked her down the aisle as Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” played. She wore a lace mermaid gown by Adam Zohar, her veil trailing behind as her blended family looked on.

    Empty-nest moments and college goodbyes

Fast forward to 2025, and Lara is officially a college mom. One child has just graduated; the other is now a junior. In a 2024 post, she shared a sweet throwback of Duff and Katharine in their school uniforms with the caption: “College drop off complete… now a senior and a sophomore!! Love you guys ❤️”

Letting go isn’t easy, but Lara’s making it joyful. She was recently spotted in Nashville, soaking up some impromptu fun with fellow moms after a flight delay. “If we moms have to be stranded, there’s no place we would rather do it,” she joked.

From lunch boxes to dorm rooms, Lara’s embraced every stage of motherhood and she’s not done documenting the ride.

Paris selfies, tennis kisses, and life with Rick

Lara and Rick are no strangers to a photo op. Whether they’re goofing off in front of the Eiffel Tower, sharing a kiss at the US Open, or sipping beer at Fenway Park, the couple’s chemistry radiates.

Their shared love of sports and travel has taken them from Wimbledon to the Amalfi Coast. One anniversary trip to Italy came three years after their wedding, prompting Lara to post: “Worth the wait 🇮🇹❤️”

Rick, who founded MarketAxess in 2000, is also known for his philanthropy, including a $20 million gift to his alma mater, Miami University. The finance whiz and former golf team captain may fly under the celebrity radar, but next to Lara, he’s very much in the spotlight.

Still Lara: Stylish, sentimental, and grounded

Despite the high-profile career and glam moments, Lara stays grounded in family. Whether it’s celebrating milestones with Duff and Katharine or turning a delayed flight into a girls’ night out, she finds joy in the little moments.

She’s also open about the joys and chaos of raising teens, blending families, and growing older without apology.

In short? Lara Spencer isn’t chasing a new role. She’s starring in the one she’s written herself, with flea market finds, French selfies, college farewells, and plenty of love to go around.
