They vanished without a trace in 2014. Now, 11 years later, their mother has been re-indicted and re-arrested on murder charges.
In a shocking development, Catherine Hoggle, the mother of Sarah (3) and Jacob (2), has been re-indicted on two counts of first-degree murder, years after she was first linked to their disappearance. The children were last seen with their mother on Labor Day weekend, 2014, and have never been found.
Sarah and Jacob were reported missing in early September 2014, shortly after Labor Day weekend.
For more than a decade, their case remained one of Maryland’s most haunting unsolved mysteries. Now, the focus is back on the woman who was the last to see them alive.
“Dropped at Daycare” — Then Gone
According to the children’s father, Troy Turner, Catherine told him she had dropped Sarah and Jacob off at daycare. But when it was time to pick them up, she couldn’t say where they were.
Hours later, after a frantic search, the couple stopped at a Chick-fil-A. Turner says Catherine went inside and vanished. She was found days later, wandering in nearby Germantown, but the children were gone.
A Mother Declared Incompetent — Now Facing Trial
Catherine Hoggle was initially charged with neglect and abduction, but in 2017, a grand jury indicted her on murder charges. At the time, a judge ruled her incompetent to stand trial due to long-standing mental illness, including schizophrenia.
She remained in a state psychiatric hospital for eight years before being discharged on July 23, 2025 and was re-arrested shortly after.
Now, at 38, Hoggle faces two murder charges and is back in custody.
A Father’s Plea: “It’s Time to Find My Children”
Turner has never given up hope. Speaking to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, he said:
“For the past 10 years, the focus has been on her… I want the focus to be put back on finding my children.”
The NCMEC has supported the family throughout the search, releasing age-progression photos to help the public imagine what Sarah and Jacob might look like today.
Mental Illness, Legal Loopholes, and a Family Still Waiting
Hoggle’s attorneys continue to argue that she remains mentally unfit for trial, while other family members, including her own mother, now believe she fully understands what’s happening.
As the legal process resumes, one heartbreaking truth remains: Sarah and Jacob are still missing.
Their father’s message is clear:
“If someone knows anything, it’s time to come forward. It’s past time.”
